Lawn & Plant Tips

Should You Fertilize Your Lawn in October?

The answer depends on what’s growing in your lawn. In eastern North Carolina, warm-season grass and tall fescue need different care as the weather cools.

If you have centipedegrass or zoysia, skip a routine fall nitrogen application. These lawns are moving toward winter dormancy. Adding nitrogen at the wrong time can encourage unwanted growth and increase disease problems. Other nutrient needs should be considered separately, using the appropriate grass calendar and soil-test guidance.

Tall fescue follows a different schedule. Fall is an important feeding season, and NC State’s maintenance calendar includes applications in mid-September and again in November. Check what’s already been applied before adding another treatment in October. Newly seeded areas may need a different plan from established turf.

The word “winterizer” on a bag doesn’t tell you whether the product fits your lawn. Match it to your grass and its current needs. Bermudagrass has its own late-season guidance, too, so avoid applying one schedule to every lawn.

For homeowners and property managers, the first step is the same: identify the grass and gather recent treatment records.
