Lawn & Plant Tips

Summer Weed Control

Summer weeds can stand out quickly in a Greenville lawn, especially when the surrounding grass is thin or stressed. Before reaching for a weed killer, identify both the weed and your turf. A product that works well in one lawn can damage another grass species.

Know what you are treating

Grassy weeds, broadleaf weeds and sedges require different control choices. Nutsedge is a common source of confusion because it resembles grass. Its stems are triangular in cross-section, and established plants can regrow from underground tubers. Mowing off the leaves will not remove that underground growth.

Clemson Extension notes that nutsedge often points to wet conditions, frequent irrigation or leaks, although established plants can survive dry conditions too. Check those conditions while planning control so the same area is not continually inviting new problems.

If the area stays wet between watering cycles, our sister brand AquaSano’s guide to spotting irrigation leaks explains which observations can help with a system check.

Respect summer stress

The herbicide label must cover your grass, the target weed and the application conditions. Centipedegrass, Bermuda and zoysia have different tolerances. Heat and drought stress can further narrow the options, so a July calendar date alone is not a reason to spray.

Tall fescue deserves particular caution. NC State’s lawn calendar advises against herbicide use during June through August. For a fescue lawn, discuss a later treatment plan rather than copying a warm-season program. Never increase the label rate to try to overcome large or stubborn weeds.

Make the next visit more useful

Take clear close-up photos and a wider photo showing where the weeds grow. Note recent treatments and whether the area stays wet. Some perennial weeds need follow-up management; a quick change in leaf color does not prove the whole plant is gone.

For managed properties, share those observations with both the mowing and treatment teams so everyone is working from the same information.
