When to Prevent Crabgrass in Eastern NC

March is a good time to check your weed-control plan, but it can be late for the first crabgrass-prevention application in eastern North Carolina. Waiting until the lawn is fully green can mean missing the best opportunity to prevent summer annual weeds.

Check timing before weeds appear

Pre-emergent herbicides work on susceptible weeds as they germinate. They generally will not remove established weeds already visible in the lawn. NC State places the spring prevention window for bermudagrass in mid-February through early March. Local conditions and the product label determine the right timing for an individual property.

If that window has passed, first check what has emerged and what was already applied. Adding another product without reviewing the earlier treatment can create unnecessary overlap. A missed prevention application calls for reassessment rather than a heavier dose.

Match the plan to your grass

Centipedegrass, Bermuda, zoysia and tall fescue do not tolerate every herbicide equally. Confirm that the label covers both your grass and the weed you want to control. Spring green-up also matters: some post-emergent treatments can injure warm-season grass during that transition.

Tell your lawn-care provider about any planned seeding, sod or repair work. Weed preventers can interfere with new turf establishment, and the waiting period varies by product. Follow the label for watering after application, too; activation requirements are part of getting the treatment right.

Keep a simple treatment record

For a home lawn or managed commercial property, record the product, application date and treated areas. Share that record with anyone responsible for mowing, irrigation or additional treatments. It makes the next decision easier and helps prevent duplicate applications.
