Brown grass in August needs a closer look before you change the lawn-care plan. Dry soil, uneven watering and disease can produce similar-looking damage from a distance. Adding water or fertilizer without checking the cause can waste time and make the problem harder to sort out.
Start with moisture and the pattern
Check moisture below the surface in both brown and green areas. Look for missed sprinkler coverage and note whether the problem follows a slope, pavement edge or wet low spot. Grass under drought stress may develop rolled leaves and lingering footprints before it turns brown.
If sprinkler coverage appears uneven, our sister brand AquaSano’s dry-spot guide explains what to check before extending the watering schedule.
Some established lawns can become dormant during dry weather, but brown color alone cannot tell you whether the grass will recover. Newly established turf is especially vulnerable. Photograph the area and note when the change first appeared.
Identify the grass before naming a disease
Tall fescue can develop brown patch during warm, humid weather. NC State describes patches of discolored turf and tan leaf lesions with darker borders. Excess nitrogen and long periods of wet leaves can increase disease pressure.
Centipedegrass and zoysia have a different disease pattern, including large patch associated with cooler seasonal conditions. Bermuda also has its own likely problems. A brown area in each of these grasses does not automatically call for the same fungicide.
Gather evidence before treatment
Record mowing changes, fertilizer and weed-control applications, irrigation timing and how quickly the damaged area is spreading. Include a close-up of the grass blades as well as a photo of the whole patch. On commercial grounds, ask the maintenance team for its observations and application records.
NC State recommends linking symptoms with the grass species and conditions, and some cases need laboratory examination. Avoid an automatic fertilizer application or repeated spraying while the cause remains unclear.
